Organizational Development
I work with small and large organizations that are interested in creating a greater alignment between their vision and practice. All organizations must be ready for constant change—flexible and effective organizations achieve this readiness through a clear understanding of their core principles. Using careful research, collaborative planning, and creative problem solving we help teams build skills, understanding, and trust necessary for success. Services I offer include:
Strategic planning
“Joseph McIntyre…possess a profound understanding of the subtle dynamics of human interaction, and a large toolkit filled with efficient yet patient methods for conducting goal-oriented group work. ...[He] successfully led our organization, through a comprehensive strategic planning exercise and we couldn’t have been more pleased.
Tim Tucker, California Ag Leadership Foundation”
Organizations large and small, new and old, all need to chart a clear path towards achieving their goals. Strategic planning, done well, can help your team find the shortest route to success.
I use a four-part iterative method that will:
- Clarify your mission and vision
- Assess your changing work environment
- Evaluate your internal capabilities
- Establish strategic objectives and action plans to reach those objectives.
This method can be adapted to retreat settings or done in several meetings as best fits your needs and schedule. Generally effective strategic planning requires between 8 and 16 hours of group time, plus work between sessions.
Organizational issue assessment and resolution
All organizations reach a point where things are simply not working as well as they should. Maybe conflict has arisen or communication has disappeared. Whatever the symptom, we work with committed team leaders to design an effective response that leverages the people who know the situation the best—team members.
I use a three part approach that involves:
- Collecting information from team members about what is working and not working
- Analyzing the data for patterns and issues
- Designing group problem-solving sessions that give your team the opportunity to and responsibility for finding the right solution.
I focus equally on the interpersonal dynamics in the team and on how the work is actually done. Usually problems between people can be traced back to problems in the way work is organized.
This is a comprehensive change effort that occurs over one to two months. It is possible to stretch or compress the effort as your needs and time constraints demand.
Leadership development and support
Working with committed leaders is at the core of my practice. I am available for leadership coaching in person or by phone. Having an experienced, but removed support system gives you an opportunity to frankly discuss the most difficult parts of your job. Coaching can be an effective part of your leadership development plan, particularly when combined with your efforts to learn more about best management practices.
Training and development services
“I just wanted to thank you for the great training you provided us this week. You obviously put into practice what you preach. Your level of interaction was exactly what I think the class required – group work, partner work, assignments, presentations, demonstrations and the rest of the activities kept your audience awake, engaged and interested throughout the two-day class. You broke down the information into manageable chunks and presented it at the level that every member of your audience understood (as diverse as they were). The class was personal yet professional, allowing each of us to practice on the spot what we learned and reinforce the new skills.”

I also offer training and development for organizations looking to increase the skill levels of their employees in a variety of areas. I offer courses in:
- Communications
- Training the trainer—best practices in training
- Leadership development
I can also work with you to develop custom curriculum to meet your needs.
