Hurricane Katrina is sure to become the most devastating natural disaster in US history. My heart goes out to the millions who are suffering the impact of this terrible storm.
I was particularly struck by the reports from many small and medium sized businesses that suddenly found themselves without their buildings, equipment, and business records.
Without those records, it will be difficult for businesses to get fair insurance settlements and resume operations. This highlights the needs for even small businesses to have records management systems.
The good news is that it is much easier than ever to store your business records offsite. Quickbooks offes online storage of accounting files. Apple’s .mac service offers easy online backup of files for Macintosh users and hundreds of similar services are available no matter what operating system you use.
You can also back up to CDs or DVDs and then take these offsite. To be really safe, it is good to consider mailing these backups to a contact out of state.
